9 Supplement Label Red Flags That Should Make You Put the Tub Down

Supplements are lightly regulated, which means the label is doing more marketing than disclosure. Nine signals separate a product worth your money from one worth skipping.
The nine red flags
None of these are automatically disqualifying on their own. Two or more together usually are.
- Proprietary blend — hides how little of each ingredient you get
- Ingredient lists longer than the label can justify
- Doses far below what the cited research used ('fairy dusting')
- Disease claims: 'cures', 'treats', 'reverses'
- No third-party testing mark such as NSF or Informed Choice
- No named source for key ingredients
- Sugar or maltodextrin as the first ingredient in a 'health' product
- Before-and-after photos as the primary evidence
- A brand that will not tell you where it manufactures
Why manufacturing ownership matters
Most supplement brands are marketing companies buying from contract manufacturers, so their quality is only as good as an outsourced batch. A company that owns its farms and facilities can be held accountable for what goes in.
Ask any brand two questions: who makes this, and can I see a certificate of analysis? The answers are diagnostic.
What a good label looks like
Short, specific, and boring. Recognizable ingredients, disclosed amounts, a certification mark, and claims about nutrition rather than disease.
That is the standard we apply to everything we recommend.
Products from a manufacturer that owns its own farms and facilities.

- What is a proprietary blend?
- A grouping of ingredients with only a combined weight disclosed, so you cannot tell whether the active ingredient is present at an effective dose.
- What does third-party tested mean?
- An independent lab has verified the contents and screened for contaminants. NSF Certified for Sport and Informed Choice are the recognized marks.
- Are expensive supplements better?
- Not reliably. Verified dosing, ingredient sourcing and manufacturing control predict quality far better than price.
